Even our resident fish guy (and all around pet lover), Mark Wyman, says his cat “will look directly at me and knock something off the table.” But, why?
Cats are natural hunters, and will continue to train to be good hunters all their lives. According to HowStuffWorks, cats knock things off of tables to symbolize playing with their prey. Same goes for why they love rolling toilet paper off the roll, why they attack your feet, and why they love chasing lasers. It’s their natural instinct.
YOUR CAT THINKS THEY OWN YOU – NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND
Has it been awhile since your cat has shown you attention, and then all of a sudden she’ll come up and rub against your leg? Cute, right?! Not quite.
Cats indicate important things like territory and sexual availability with scent glands located on the forehead and sides of the head. Cats have an extraordinary sense of smell and they know that each cat has his or her own scent. When a cat rubs against you, it’s informing other cats that you are its territory.
YOUR CAT RECOGNIZES YOUR VOICE – BUT SHE DOESN’T CARE
A recent study published in the Animal Cognition Journal discovered that cats can recognize their owner’s voice, but that doesn’t mean they will respond to them. This is because cats have not evolved to become domesticated enough to obey human’s orders, according to a study by researchers at the University of Tokyo.
YOUR CAT KNOWS JUST HOW TO MANIPULATE YOU
Cats have a very specific way of getting your attention – because they know how to tug on your heartstrings with their meow. Huffington Post describes this as “that grating sound of a purr mixed with a high pitched cry.” You know the one.
This cry is very similar to a human infant cry, and cats have figured out how to leverage that with their human counterparts to get what they want, whether its food, attention, or whatever their little kitty heart desires.
But, whether or not your feline fur babies are total jerks… you’ll never stop loving them!
