Hurricane Preparedness for Pets: Keeping Your Furry Friends Safe

Hurricane season can be stressful, not just for us but for our pets too. When preparing for a storm, it’s easy to focus on human necessities and forget that our four-legged family members have their own needs. Whether you have a dog, cat, bird, or something a little more exotic, here’s how you can ensure they stay safe before, during, and after the storm.

Before the Storm: Plan Ahead

  1. Pet Emergency Kit – Just like you have a hurricane kit, your pet needs one too! Include:
    • A two-week supply of food and water – Consider small bags of food for easier transport and if you are a raw feeder pick up some freeze dried or canned food to tide you over.
    • Any medications and medical records – Store them in a watertight bag like a Ziploc freezer bag.
    • A leash, harness, and/or carrier – We have Precision collapsible wire dog crates for larger pets or Bergan and Dogline soft sided carriers for cats and small pets. All dogs and cats, should have collars or harness, a leash and a tag.
    • Comfort items like a favorite toy or blanketTall Tails blankets or MultiPet Calming fleece toys can help reduce stress. You can also pick up some Thunder Works calming spray to use on these items.
    • Poop bags, litter, or other sanitation supplies – Earth Rated Poop Bags and Disposable cardboard litter boxes work well. If you want to get your pet used to pee pee pads or artificial grass, you will want to start this WAY before you are ready for a hurricane- I am speaking from experience 😉
  2. ID & Microchipping – If your pet isn’t microchipped, now is the time (come see us when we have our Mobile Vet Clinic- see website for dates). Make sure their collars have up-to-date ID tags like our My Family pet tags (we make them while you wait).
  3. Find a Pet-Friendly Shelter – Not all emergency shelters accept pets. Research pet-friendly options ahead of time, including hotels or shelters that allow animals. Websites like BringFido can help find pet-friendly accommodations.
  4. Practice Evacuations – If you may need to leave, do a test run with your pet. Get them comfortable with being in their carrier or on a leash in case of emergency transport.

During the Storm: Keep Them Calm & Secure

  1. Stay Indoors – Keep pets inside in a safe, enclosed space away from windows. A small room like a bathroom or closet works well if the storm is severe.
  2. Provide Comfort – Storms can be scary! Play calming music, give treats (Wild Meadows treats will help), and offer a safe space for them to hide if they feel anxious. Products like ThunderShirt Anxiety Jacket or PetReleaf CBD treats or oils can help soothe them.
  3. Leash & Carrier Readiness – If you need to evacuate quickly, have your pet’s leash or carrier within reach.

After the Storm: Stay Alert

  1. Check for Hazards – Downed power lines, debris, and contaminated floodwaters can be dangerous. Keep pets on a leash and don’t let them roam freely right away.
  2. Monitor for Stress or Illness – Hurricanes can be traumatic for pets. Watch for behavioral changes like excessive hiding, aggression, or loss of appetite. PetReleaf Calming Treats or Oils can help reduce post-storm anxiety. If symptoms persist, check with your vet.
  3. Rebuild Routine – Pets thrive on routine, so get back to their normal schedule as soon as possible. Regular feeding times, walks, and playtime will help them feel secure again.

Final Thoughts

Hurricanes can be unpredictable, but your pet’s safety doesn’t have to be. By planning ahead and staying prepared, you can keep your furry (or feathered) family members safe and sound. When the storm passes, they’ll thank you with wagging tails, happy purrs, or whatever sound your pet makes to say, “I love you.”

Stay safe out there, pet parents!
