From Candy to Costumes: Keeping Howl-Ween Pet-Friendly
🍁 October Fun (and Safety!) for Your Pets 🍁
It’s officially October, friends! That means pumpkins on porches, crunchy-ish leaves under our feet, and maybe even a little more pep in our pets’ steps as we welcome cooler weather. Fall (if there is such a thing here) is such a cozy, fun season, and our furry family members deserve to enjoy it right alongside us.
At Leo&Lucky’s, we notice pets seem to perk up this time of year. Long walks feel easier, there’s more energy to burn, and the weather is FINALLY on our side. Do leaves fall in your yard? Instant doggy playground. A sunny window with a breeze? Cat heaven. And yes, if your pup tends to get chilly, it’s absolutely okay to pull out that cute little sweater. (We won’t judge— TBH, we’ll compliment it!)
🍬 Halloween & Candy Season
With all the fun of October also comes a few things to be mindful of. Halloween candy is everywhere, and while it’s delicious for us, it’s definitely not pet-friendly. Chocolate, sugar-free candies with xylitol, and yes, even raisins can be dangerous. Be sure to keep your treat stash out of paw’s reach—we know how sneaky some pets can be when it comes to food! L&L tip: If your kids are anything like I was when I was young, I hid candy in my room (sorry Mom and Dad). Be sure that they know the risks to ensure your pets’ safety while playing in their rooms too.
🎭 Costumes or Cozy Bandanas?
Pet costumes are one of my favorite parts of Halloween (who doesn’t love a dachshund dressed as a hot dog?). That said, not every pet is into playing dress-up. If your pet tolerates a costume, make sure it’s comfortable, safe, and doesn’t block their eyes or breathing. If they’d rather skip it, a festive bandana or cute collar accessory is a great way to get into the spirit without the stress.
🚪 Trick-or-Treat Night Tips
Trick-or-treating can be overwhelming for pets—strangers in costumes, the doorbell ringing non-stop, and lots of excitement. To keep things calm, set up your furry friend(s) in a quiet room with their bed, a toy, or even a long-lasting chew. It keeps them safe and stress-free while you enjoy greeting the little ghouls and goblins at the door. L&L tip: If you have pets trick-or-treat at your house, be sure you are stocked up with goodies for them too!
🎃 Pumpkin for Pets
Did you know plain pumpkin (not pie filling) is a fantastic treat for pets? It’s gentle on their digestion and full of fiber. You can mix a spoonful into their food or bake some simple pumpkin treats for dogs. Just remember: pumpkins left outside for too long can grow mold, which is not safe for curious nibblers.
🍂 Enjoy the Season Together
October is such a wonderful month to slow down and make memories with your pets. Whether it’s a cozy night cuddled up inside, a romp through the leaves (or leaf), or just a little extra time together, they’ll love being part of your fall fun.
