Just A Walk In The Park

Dog walking on a leash Pets Plus Parrish

It’s a beautiful day — take your dog and head to the closest park for some sunshine and exercise. Studies show that your dog is a great stand-in for an expensive personal trainer, helping you reap the benefits of exercise for both of you. The incentive provided by your enthusiastic dog may be just what you need to get off the couch and out into the spring sunshine. What you’ll need:

Collar or Harness and Leash. Most parks require that dogs be on-lead at all times. Even if off-lead is allowed, you should have your leash handy. Be sure that the collar or harness fits correctly — you don’t want it slipping off at an inopportune moment. Leo&Lucky’s Parrish pet store has a wide selection of collars, leads, and harnesses and we are happy to help you choose and fit your choice!

Poop Bags.  Pick up after your pet — and take the filled poop bag with you to the nearest disposal area. Dog waste can transmit parasites and disease — it’s just responsible dog ownership to dispose of your dog’s feces.

Water Bottle and Bowl. Especially in warm or hot weather, take water with you. When you stop for a rest, offer your dog refreshment too.

Waist Pack or Back Pack.  Keep your hands free by stashing essentials in a dedicated pack. It’s a good place for your keys, your phone, poop bags, dog treats, even your water bottle and bowl. Add a toy or a ball for more fun.

Doggie Back Pack.  Make your dog do some of the work! There are many different dog backpacks available. Limit the weight you ask your dog to carry. Usually 5-10% of their body weight is a good place to start, increasing to about 20% for most dogs.

Insect Repellent. Watch out for ticks and other insects. Use repellent or another preventative such as Frontline or Advantix. Add an insect repellent bandana, neck gaitor, or tee shirt. Layer an herbal repellent as well as the more effective chemical treatments. A lint roller used after your walk can lift off ticks that haven’t attached.

In The Car. If you drove to the park, you’ll want a towel to wipe off any mud or dirt acquired on the walk. You might want to keep bottled water in the car for drink when you are back from your outing. A first aid kit stashed in a safe place will let you treat any minor emergencies.

So what are you waiting for? Stop by Leo&Lucky’s Parrish location to pick up any items you need to get on out there, enjoy the day and get moving — both of you!
